Subsidies for the arts in the Suburbs

June 3rd 2009, the district of Longeuil, in Quebec, Canada gave out more than 200 000$ in grants and subsidies to local artists, organisations.
Listening to Claude Gladu’s (the mayor) speech and those of his collegues, you had the impression that art was an important part of the community and that artists themselves were ‘embassadors for the cities’. A beautifull positive vibe filled the hall. Receiving a grant came with responsability, duty to honoring your art.

Society for the Arts , SODAC announced its annual grants and subsidies in the following manner:

Visual Arts : Anne Ashton, Michel Beaucage, Pierre Bellemare, Karin Boyer, Bertrand Carrière, Stéphanie Chalut, COZIC, Dominique Paul, Plein sud, Zocalo.
Literature : Gilles Jobidon, Sylvain Meunier. Theatre : Danielle Bissonnette, Carré-Théâtre, Carol Jones, Louise Laprade, Théâtre du 450, Théâtre Motus.
Music : Sylvain Cossette, Ensemble vocal Polymnie, Andréanne Hatin, Monique Jutras, Farangis Nurulla.

In addition, three grants were given to Young Artists (Bourse de la Relève) to help advance their budding carreers. The recipients are: Tina Louise Cayouette violist, Jean Simon Labrosse, and the band Lance-Rocket, composé de Véronique Baltazar, Charles Bernatchez Le Scelleur, Olivier Dubreuil Gariepy, Patrick O’Brien et Francis Rousseau.

Can rosin go bad? Freeze?

In february, I played an outdoor concert. It was cold….very cold. This was in Canada, in the middle of winter. The staff were trying to be as nice as possible, surrounding me with kerosene heaters. Thankfully, my instrument and bow are fine, the performance well….frozen fingers give you an idea. But….something happened to my rosin! It was no longer as sticky, and the sound it produced was squeaky and brittle. I tried putting it the microwave a little…… it became better for a little while, but did not last. I have heard of rosin drying out, but changing its molecular composition because of cold weather? Can rosin freeze?
